The Economist offers this brief review of Water, the beleaguered, long-awaited final installment of Deepa Mehta's trilogy. The first two films in the trilogy were my beloved Fire, which is almost too close to my heart for me to discuss intellectually, and the stunning Earth, a review of which I have been working on for a while and will post here soon.
The Economist piece tells some of Water's tortuous history so I will not repeat it here. Exciting to read was that the Economist adored the film, calling it "the finest Indian film for a generation" and repeatedly comparing Ms. Mehta to Satyajit Ray, among others. I can believe it; after seeing Earth I have no doubt that Mehta has the chops to make brilliant films.
I only wish that through all the trauma of its creation the original cast of Water, which was to feature both Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das, could have been preserved. Still, I eagerly look forward to Water's U.S. release - as far as I know, still unscheduled.
